Description

Plas Talgarth is a large house dating from the late 18th century, with an earlier farmhouse incorporated into the design. The original farmhouse is set at right angles to the main front of the later house, with the gables connected by a 20th-century quadrant walkway.

The main house is constructed of coursed square rubble stone with raised sandstone quoins and an outsetting rubble plinth, set beneath a slate roof largely concealed behind parapets. The design is of a Late Georgian style, and the house is three stories high with a basement, arranged over five by four window bays. The main front faces south, with the central section projecting forward, and major elevations to the east and north, alongside a service wing to the west. The windows are 12-pane unhorned sashes set within openings with a corniced sandstone voussoir flat arch over, and each has a raised, fluted keystone. Similar windows are present on the first floor, and 6-pane windows are found in the attic storey. The elevation is finished with a modillion cornice. Ridge stacks are visible.

The central entrance is approached by three steps leading to a Tuscan doorcase with an open pediment extending over narrow side lights, creating a slightly cramped feel. A part-glazed door is fitted, accompanied by a radial fanlight. The side elevations, each with four window bays, mirror this fenestration. The rear wing is rendered and painted, with a renewed slate roof. It features five French windows on the first floor, with lintels matching those of the main house, which open onto a cast iron balcony supported by cast iron columns. Further windows are located towards the western end.

To the left of the main front, a quadrant wing extends to a stone building at right angles; this was formerly the farmhouse that preceded the present building and is now used as a community bar. This section has three window bays with early 20th-century replacements and a 20th-century roof extension over a front terrace.

The interior has been converted into flats. The main entrance opens into a rectangular hallway with a lateral fireplace and walls panelled above a low chair rail, accentuated by a bold modillion cornice. Doorcases throughout feature moulded architraves and raised cornices embellished with a Greek key moulding. A dog-leg staircase, located at the rear of the hall, rises around an open well with three turned balusters to each tread and iron brackets. On the first floor, similar doorcases open from the landing, accompanied by an early 20th-century fire surround. The earlier farmhouse is divided by ceiling beams into five bays, currently without internal partitions. A kitchen-style fireplace is located at the north end.
