Description

Wern Farmhouse is a 3-storeyed L-plan house built of rubble, resting on boulder and rock foundations, and topped with shallow-pitched, hipped slate roofs. The central chimney is located at the intersection of the two wings, providing a lobby entry to the main southeast-facing front. The other wing features a gabled and projecting lateral chimney at the rear, with both stacks having weathercoursing and simply-moulded capping, though the latter has been altered. The front has an off-centre entrance on the left with a modern door, and above it is an inset slate plaque commemorating Richard Jones of Wern. To the right of the entrance are two 4-pane late 19th-century sash windows, with a small 6-pane window beyond; the first and second floors have single 4-pane sash windows. There is also an off-centre entrance on the southwest side, with modern steel-framed windows in altered openings on all floors, and similar modern windows on the ground floor of the west gable. At the time of inspection, modern extensions were under construction on the north gable and lateral chimney side.

Inside, the lobby entry leads to a former hall on the right of the entrance, which features a late 16th-century fireplace with a wide, stopped-chamfered bressummer and an early 19th-century replacement beamed ceiling. The former parlour has a fine primary beamed ceiling, with wide stopped-chamfering on the main beams and ogee stops on the joists. There is a stopped-chamfered bressummer over the lateral chimney. The staircase is a plain early 19th-century stick baluster design with square newels. Most first and second-floor rooms have pegged oak doorcases, although they are mostly boxed in with modern materials, and the roof features 19th-century king-post trusses.
