Description

Nos 1-3 Quarryman's Cottages in Ffestiniog are a single-storey terrace of three identical units, built with whitened slate-rubble and featuring a renewed decorative slate roof. Each cottage has four equally spaced squat stacks topped with slate capping and weather-coursing. The central entrances are flanked by narrow 12-pane recessed sash windows, with slate cills and modern boarded doors.

To the left of no 1, there is a later 19th-century wash house lean-to with a slate slab roof and similar wall construction. This lean-to has a reduced 4-pane window and a boarded door to the left, along with a further entrance at the front and a small adjoining, part-open coal-store. To the right gable of no 3, there is a more substantial later 19th-century lean-to that is slightly recessed and has a contemporary boarded door and a modern slate roof. The upper gable end of the terrace is adorned with decorative slates. In front of this, there is a near-contemporary ty bach with a slab roof and a boarded door.

Inside, each cottage maintains its original layout, consisting of a hall and a small parlour on the ground floor, with two attic bedrooms accessed by a simple straight-flight stair from the hall. The attic spaces are flagged and feature simple beamed ceilings. Each cottage has a large fireplace on the left with slate lintels and mantel shelves. Nos 2 and 3 include late 19th-century ranges, with no 3 featuring a grained fireplace surround. To the left of this, there are enclosed cupboards in a recess, though the upper doors are missing. All cottages except no 1 have a boarded draft screen behind the entrance with shelves on the reverse. The parlours of nos 1 and 2 have small original slate fireplaces with inscised decoration, with no 1 showcasing late Regency-style reeded and rosette decoration. Behind each parlour, there is a small pantry, with nos 2 and 3 retaining some shelving and fittings.
