Description
Clenennau is a 19th-century building constructed from rubble stonework with slated roofs, designed in an 'L'-plan over two storeys. The front, which was rebuilt around 1880, features a symmetrical 3-bay layout with a central 4-panelled door and a plain overlight, flanked by 3-light timber mullioned and transomed windows on both floors. The building has gable stacks, and the first bay of the rear wing, which connects to the main range, is an addition from the mid-17th century, likely built by Sir John Owen. This rear wing includes a door facing the farmyard and small paned timber windows, with similar windows located on the north gable end near the outer corners.
The main front range underwent refurbishment in the late 19th century, which included the addition of corniced rooms on both floors. The roof consists of five bays and retains features from the late 15th century, including two central arched braced collar beam trusses with raking struts supporting substantial principal rafters, with joints that are four times pegged and soffits that are chamfered, indicating three open bays at the center. The two levels of purlins are splay scarfed, although the southern end truss has been replaced. There are no signs of smoke blackening, suggesting that this area may have served as a parlour wing. The main range itself comprises two bays, featuring two pegged collar trusses with principals that have a blade-like section. An additional third bay is found beyond a stone wall, which contains the stair and cross passage doors at the junction of the two ranges.
