Description
Cwm-yr-afon Farmhouse is a farmhouse with attached farm buildings, dating to the 18th century and built into a slightly rising hillside, with the farm buildings situated at a higher level behind the house. The main house is constructed of rubble stone, with a limewashed front elevation, and has a graded slate roof – the rear portion being a modern replacement. Chimneys are present on the original gable ends and on the gable end of an added bay. Originally a two-storey, three-window range, a bay was later added to the right. The original range has a central doorway with a plank door and small overlight, flanked by twelve-pane sash windows. Similar windows are located on the first floor, but are not aligned with those below. The added bay has a doorway to the left and a matching window on each floor. A wing to the rear of the left-hand bay features similar sash windows to the first floor and paired four-pane sashes to the ground floor of its north-east elevation. This wing is built into the rising ground and has a lean-to addition at an angle with the main range. The rear of the extension has a gabled porch, providing access to a granary.
The farm buildings form a courtyard at the rear of the house, raised above the level of the house. A stone wall encloses the yard, connecting the gable end of the house with the cowhouse, which is parallel to the main building. The rear wing of the house is attached to the stable and barn. These buildings are constructed of rounded rubble with coped gables and random slate roofs. The barn has a large entrance door (with an aligned doorway providing access directly to a field behind) and two tiers of ventilation slits to the left. The stable, in the left-hand bay, has a doorway to the right and a window on each floor. All openings feature rough stone lintels. The rear elevation of the barn has tiered ventilation slits on either side of the doorway, and a loft above the stable is accessed via steps to a doorway in a gabled dormer. The later cowhouse is situated at right angles to the barn and has a single window to the left and an original doorway towards the centre. The right-hand bay has been altered and includes modern infill to the right of another doorway.
The farmhouse's internal layout follows regional conventions, with a cross-passage separating the main hall-kitchen from a smaller parlour and service rooms. It is reported that the original chimney stair has been retained. The property was not fully inspected.
