Description
The private chapel at Plas-y-nant is a converted barn dating from the 19th century. It is constructed of roughly coursed rubblestone, featuring ashlar door and window dressings, and has a slate roof topped with a small round-arched bellcote on the south-west gable end. The building has a rectangular plan built into the side of a slope, which seems to have allowed for a cowhouse beneath the original barn.
The long north-west wall includes two square-headed leaded windows with 4-centred arches and hollow spandrels, along with a small gabled ventilator positioned below the ridge. The entrance is located in the north-east gable end, accessed through a plank door fitted with fleur-de-lys strap hinges, with a window situated above it. The south-west gable end features a round-arched window opening that contains a 20th-century window.
Inside, the original barn roof consists of four bays supported by three pegged A-frame trusses and triple purlins, which have been cut off at the tie beam level, leaving only the stubs. The roof is now boarded above the rafters, and there is a suspended timber floor across the former cowhouse. Additionally, there is 19th-century stained glass in the windows of the north-west wall.
