Description
Ystrad-uchaf is a farmhouse constructed from uncoursed rubblestone with a boulder plinth on the earlier part, which is painted on the front. It features slate roofs that are graded to the rear. The original single-storey rectangular-plan house is aligned from south-west to north-east and includes a cross-passage to the left and an external lateral stack at the rear. There is a plank door on the far left and three tall window openings across the front elevation, which now have plastic windows but originally featured Victorian sashes. Additionally, there are two 20th-century rooflights to the left and center, a tall integral end stack to the right, and a massive external stack at the rear in a gabled projection, which has a tall corbelled shaft with slate drips. A small catslide outshut to the right of this stack obscures the original cross-passage.
To the left of the cross-passage is an 18th-century extension, where the original eaves line is visible beneath two small windows with slate cills to the right and right of center. Similar windows are located directly below the entrance, which has a plank door and a projecting stone lintel. There is a large integral end stack to the left with slate drips. All windows have been replaced with plastic but were originally 4-pane casements in smaller earlier openings. The rear features a catslide outshut and a 20th-century flying buttress on the gable end near the wheel-pit for a former butter or gorse mill.
The earlier part of the farmhouse has a massive fireplace, which has been partly rebuilt, featuring a large timber lintel on the back wall. The first floor displays A-frame trusses in four narrow bays with double purlins. The later part includes two exposed cross-beams and joists in the ground-floor room, which was formerly divided into several rooms.
