Description
The Old Vicarage is a late Georgian, two-storey house with pebbledash elevations and slate roofs, now converted into offices. It features an asymmetrical entrance front facing Waterloo Street, with a narrow recessed bay flanked by projecting gabled bays. The left gable has a deeply recessed entrance at the return angle. At the southern end, there is an asymmetrically gabled extension, and the rear of the building has four windows facing the cathedral, including a splayed bay on the ground floor. Throughout the building, there are various small pane sash windows.
Attached to the vicarage is a single-storey church hall designed in the free Arts and Crafts style. This hall features tall lancet windows typical of architects H L North and P M Padmore, with whom Hughes was familiar. The gable ends have stepped windows, and the western gable contains an arch with a crucifix above, made of applied diamond-shaped pieces of slate. A similar, larger crucifix is located at the left end of the Tan-y-Fynwent elevation. The central gable has a corbelled lateral chimney breast that is truncated at the gable apex, flanked below by two windows and a further window to the right, all set in stepped recesses. The hall also includes small pane sash windows and grilled ventilators in the basement. A rubble wall is attached to the left side, extending up Waterloo Street, featuring inset triangular stones that may be remnants of medieval window tracery.
Inside, the hall has a three-bay layout with a segmental arched roof and simple trusses.
