Description

This is a medium-sized, gable-entry chapel built in the classical style in 1879. The exterior is rendered with lines simulating stonework, and it has a slate roof with shaped brackets to the gable. The front elevation (east) features two tall, round-arched windows positioned centrally, with round-arched entrance doors on either side. The sashes in the windows have a lower section of four large panes with marginal side lights, an upper section of two panes, and a fanlight, all with small marginal panes; they are set within thin slate sills. The door and window heads each have arched stucco surrounds supported on scrolled brackets. The central windows are enclosed within a large stucco arch that rises from ground level, breaks into the upper gable, and incorporates scrolled brackets at the impost level. A moulded arch, matching the window heads, sits above the door, featuring the word "SALEM" in large raised letters, and the date 1879 in the gable above. The ledged entrance doors have finely-painted wood graining and a brass latch. The side elevations contain four sash windows each, with two further sashes to the west, mirroring the style of the front windows but without the surrounding stucco arches.

The chapel is well-preserved and dates entirely from 1879. The interior is light and open, rectangular in plan, and without galleries. Two small, boxed lobbies flank the entrance doors on either side of the pulpit; these feature cornices and four-panel doors. The chapel walls are rendered to simulate stone. The plaster ceiling has a large floral centre rose surrounded by an outer ring of flowers, all within a moulded circle connected to a rectangular outer frame with paterae at the angles. Also inset are two lateral ventilators. The ceiling includes a moulded cornice and moulded arches with console brackets to the window heads. Raked pews are arranged in a central double block and two side blocks with panelled backs and shaped ends. A large seat enclosure has a panelled base, above which are turned balusters with bulbous bases; the bench ends are finished with ball finials. The raised pulpit platform has a plaster arch behind it and steps on each side. The panelled pulpit includes a dentil frieze, with the central section projecting slightly and supported on moulded brackets. The pews at either end of the enclosure have curved ends. The side walls of the chapel are panelled to dado level. Brass globe oil lamps are supported on ornamental iron supports, flanking the pulpit on each side.
