Description

The Church of St Mary is a small church with a rectangular plan, combining the nave and chancel under a single roof. It likely dates to the 16th century, though significantly altered. The church is constructed of uncoursed granite blocks with very large stone quoins, and has a slate roof with stone gable coping and kneelers. A small bellcote topped with a stone cross is situated on the west front, below a neo-Romanesque porch with a semi-circular arch constructed of stone voussoirs. The inner porch features a plain boarded roof, small round-headed windows to the left and right, and a 16th-century round-arched doorway leading to the nave. The double doors have ogee banded moulding, wrought-iron strap hinges and an iron stirrup handle with a moulded backplate. The south elevation has six small round-headed windows with plain stone dressings, chamfered sills, and small diamond-shaped panes. The north elevation mirrors this with five similar windows. A small, lean-to vestry is attached to the northwest side of the nave, featuring round-headed windows in the north and west walls, and a round-headed external doorway to the east. The east gable has a round-headed centre light flanked by two smaller ones, with a plain bargeboard.

The interior is highly unusual, showcasing an Arts and Crafts neo-Romanesque style. The walls are inlaid with numerous flat stone pieces, creating a grotto-like effect. The roof structure consists of six and a half bays, incorporating five reused 16th-century collar trusses, a newer arch-braced truss at the east end, and a simple unbraced collar truss to the west. The 16th-century trusses have struts above the collar with multifoil cusping, and are supported by 20th-century cusped wind-braces and ashlar pieces. The windows feature large semi-circular stone voussoirs set in deep, splayed recesses with chamfered sills. The side walls have a boarded dado and the pews are close-boarded with shaped ends. A low red sandstone wall with a moulded cap separates the nave from the chancel and extends to the base of the pulpit. The pulpit is in an Arts and Crafts Gothic style, constructed of red sandstone with square angles and upper panels decorated with curvilinear blind tracery. A red sandstone piscina is set into the south chancel wall. A 20th-century oak lectern has a cylindrical shaft and a moulded octagonal base. The font is formed from a large, roughly worked stone block set on a battered base. The oak communion rail has thin iron supports and decorated wrought-iron panels. Stained glass depicting a crucifixion scene, in memory of Claude Henry Lloyd Edwards of Nanhoron, fills the east window. Framed wooden memorial boards on the north chancel wall commemorate Richard Trygarn, who died in 1666, and Gruffyth Trygarn, who died in 1687—both connected to Richard Edwards of Nanhoron through marriage.
