Description

The War Memorial and surrounding wall is a notable structure featuring a formal classical design. The main memorial is a tall pylon-type, flanked by diagonally-set pedestals on each side, which are connected to the main memorial by curving dwarf walls. This entire arrangement is situated on a low oval platform that has two steps at the front. Surrounding the memorial are semi-circular low rubble walls that end in rubble pedestals topped with thin ashlar obelisks. The main features are crafted from tooled grey limestone.

The pylon has a rectangular plan and includes three inset plaques on the base, displaying a total of 92 names, with plaques on the front, rear, and each end. The main shaft is tall with rebated angles, and the rebated end features coved plinths. The front displays an inset plaque and an upper carved swag, while the sides are adorned with carved wreaths. A moulded cornice with rebated angles and a high blocking course crowns the memorial.

The flanking pedestals have plinths and moulded cornices, with inset panels that show names on the outward-facing side and a central wreath with the years 1939 above and 1945 below on the inward-facing end. The semi-circular wall is topped with rough rubble coping, and the end piers feature square chamfered ashlar caps, with square bases for the obelisks, which are set diagonally.
