Description
The Round House, which includes an adjoining arch and walkway, is a Grade II listed building that consists of a pair of small shops connected by a parapetted overhead walkway above a central arch. The building features stuccoed walls and a slate roof, with pantiles at the wall and gable tops. Its plan is designed as a semi-circular drum tower, with a main floor situated above a rubble basement, built against a slope. The rear wall is flat and features a stepped and scrolled gable.
A broad arch serves as the main entrance, which includes small-pane glazing and central glazed doors. Above the entrance is an applied baroque cartouche, accompanied by a decorative hanging bell to the right. To the right, steps with sloped parapet walls lead up to the walkway, which turns at a right angle to ascend over the large open arch. To the left, the wall angles to join the corner of Prior's Lodging, where there is another large open arch with a cartouche above. The rounded northwest side of the building has two 12-pane windows flanking a central small-pane glazed door that opens onto an iron balcony. Beneath the balcony, the basement level features an arched niche.
