Description
Seion Congregational Church is a Grade II listed building constructed from rendered rubblestone with stucco dressings and a slate roof, designed in a classical style. The front features three bays on a rusticated plinth, with Doric pilasters at the corners and flanking the center, all fluted only at the top section. These pilasters support a full entablature and a pedimented gable, which includes a pedimented datestone at the apex. The outer bays have tall, 14-paned round-headed windows adorned with Corinthian capitals beneath moulded architraves that include keystones. The central bay features a round-headed entrance with a pair of panelled doors set in a recess. Above this entrance is a string course and a 16-paned segmental-headed window, both of which share the same Corinthian capitals and moulded architraves as the tall windows on the outer bays. The return walls have four bays, each with tall round-headed windows similar to those on the front but lacking the architectural embellishments.
Inside, the lobby contains a staircase with turned balusters leading to the gallery. The main hall, completed in 1886, features fittings and furnishings made of pitch pine, including box pews throughout and a set fawr at the far end. This area houses an organ that fits within a moulded round-headed arch supported by tapering plain pilasters. In front of the organ is the pulpit, flanked by straight-flight staircases leading to a railed enclosure below; the staircases, pulpit sides, and enclosure all feature turned balusters. The gallery wraps around three sides on cast-iron columns and includes raked seating and a panelled front, along with a 19th-century clock at the entrance end. The flat boarded ceiling is decorated with applied timber ribbing and two richly moulded plaster roses, while the plaster coving features an Art Nouveau floral motif in the lower section with stamped decoration above.
