Description
Plas-gwyn is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, constructed of rubble with buttered joints and large boulder quoins. The roof is slate, with raised gables stepped in seven stages, square kneelers, and tall square gable stacks. The main facade has two storeys and three bays, arranged with a living/dining room at the southwest end and a parlour at the northeast end, separated by a cross passage where a later staircase has been inserted. The entrance features a six-panelled door, and the windows are 16-pane unaligned sashes; three are on the upper floor facing the front, with a three-light paned window to the left of the entrance. A rear wing containing the kitchen is pebble-dashed and has sliding sash windows. A stone corbel of unknown purpose is visible between two upper windows.
The main living room features two heavy cross beams with chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and a large fireplace in the southwest gable, partially filled in the early 19th century and now with a modern tiled surround. A studded door with original 17th-century ironmongery opens to a stone spiral staircase leading to the first floor. A later longitudinal partition creates closets behind the rear entrance. From the cross passage, the rear arch-headed opening was blocked when the later staircase was installed. According to records from the Royal Commission on Historic Monuments, the roof is supported by tapered principal rafters with cambered collars and moulded stops, and joists with shallow mouldings on the soffits, though these features are not visible.
