Description
The gatehouse at Cefnamwlch is a 17th-century structure built of rubble stone, featuring roofs made of small graded slates. It has a large square chimney at the southern end and is designed with a square plan, including a loft accessed by an external staircase on the south end, which leads to a loft door via 11 stone steps. Both the west and east fronts are similar, each showcasing a central gable above a two-light stone-mullion window that has a hoodmould and lattice glazing, with flush chamfered mullions. The ground floor features a broad cambered arch made of stone voussoirs.
On the west front, there is a heraldic tablet beneath the window displaying the arms of Griffith and Owen, with the date 1607 and the initials IGIO, representing John Griffith and Jane Owen. The stones at the southwest corner project, suggesting that the lower wall was intended to connect to another range. Inside the passageway, there are four niches with stone seats and rough stone heads, with two niches on each side of the double doors, which consist of a studded plank and an ogee-headed wicket-gate. The main beam is chamfered and has ogee stops, and the joists are hewn.
The upper room features a later roof, and the fireplace is concealed.
