Description

The gatehouse dates primarily to the 17th century, though the archway suggests earlier medieval origins. Constructed of roughly coursed pink sandstone rubble with a Welsh slate roof, it presents a domestic appearance. The structure is rectangular, with a tower attached to the right-hand gable and another to the rear of the left-hand gable. The archway, slightly off-centre, features a 2-centred head and opens onto a ribbed passage, the ribs of which may be medieval. A fine oak double door, dated 1610, is set within the archway. This door has vertical planks studded with nails and ledges on the inner face, including a wicket with an ogee head on the left-hand leaf. To the right of the archway is a 2-light window with an ovolo mullion, dripmould, and leaded lattices. Above the archway is a similar 3-light window, and another is situated in the gable. The gable is coped and has a finial. The roof is plain with a coped gable on the left. The right-hand tower is square and topped with four corner battlement-style finials, added in 1893; the left-hand tower is similarly treated. The inner face mirrors the external design, featuring an off-centre archway to the right, with a 2-light window to the left and a small 2-centred foot arch to the right, which provides access to a studded plank door and a stair. Gabled windows are consistent with those on the exterior. The gable here has kneelers with finials, likely functioning as chimneys. The towers include spiral staircases; the staircase in the left-hand tower provides access to a room above the archway, which contains stone doorways and a small 17th-century fireplace. This staircase continues to the tower roof, offering views of Moynes Court and its surroundings. A separate staircase leads to two unseen rooms within the right-hand tower. Slit windows provide light to the tower stairs, and a 2-light and a single-light window are located in the upper part of the right-hand tower. An external staircase on the left-hand tower leads to the first floor.
