Description
The gates, gate piers, and flanking walls at the south entrance to the church of St John are notable features from the Arts-and-Crafts movement. The square gate piers are constructed from rock-faced stone and have roll-moulded freestone quoins topped with truncated pyramid caps. The central double gates are framed by simple square posts, with the right-hand section including a pedestrian gate and the left-hand section being fixed. Each section of the gates features four tiers of wrought iron scrolls adorned with cast iron rosettes. The double gates are supported by six columns each, while the side sections have four columns. Additionally, the central gates are embellished with scrollwork above the top rail. The short stepped flanking walls are made of rock-faced stone and topped with freestone copings.
