Description

Eglwys Bresbyteriadd Cymru Y Garth is a Presbyterian chapel combining Italianate and early Gothic detail, built from snecked rock-faced stone with grey freestone dressings and a slate roof fitted with ridge ventilators.

The chapel presents a 3-bay gable-end front with a pedimented central section flanked by lower, near-square stair towers set slightly back. The front is dominated by a recessed central bay under a giant arch that breaks through the cornice. The outer bays feature rusticated quoin strips at the lower stage and Tuscan pilasters at the gallery level. Windows throughout have corbelled sills. The central bay displays triple round-headed windows with keystones and moulded architraves, while the outer bays contain double windows in architraves with pediments. A raised moulded band separates the two stages. At gallery level, the central bay has taller triple round-headed windows incorporating two ringed polished granite shafts, with similar double windows in the outer bays. Above the cornice sits a lunette with a large panelled apron below it, all contained within the giant arch which has a moulded head with keystone and intermediate voussoirs. The moulded pediment is crowned with an apex urn finial and iron weathervane.

At basement level, the central bay contains a half-glazed panel door with diamond-leaded lights, surrounded by Tuscan pilasters and a pediment topped with a wooden painted board recording the building and enlargement of the chapel. Flanking this are narrow segmental-headed windows, with pairs of similar windows in the outer bays.

The stair towers have freestone quoins, a freestone eaves cornice and parapet with an open balustrade featuring angle piers and urn finials, behind which sit hipped roofs. Double panelled doors with Tuscan pilasters and segmental pediments with prominent keystones provide access. Above each door are paired round-headed windows with keystones and a central ringed shaft, filled with coloured glass in small panes. The side walls of the towers contain two tall round-headed windows with keyed architraves, small-pane margin-lit sash windows under semi-circular heads with diamond glazing, and basement areas with scribed roughcast in the right-hand tower facing Dora Street, featuring two margin-lit sash windows.

The 5-window side walls are constructed of scribed roughcast and feature margin-lit 8-pane sash windows. At the lower level these have plain architraves and segmental heads, while at gallery level they are round-headed with keyed architraves and diamond-pattern glazing to the heads. Offset towards the front end are external stacks with rusticated quoins rising above eaves gables. The right side wall incorporates a porch at its end with a round-headed window in the gable and a boarded door on the side continuous with the rear of the chapel.

The forecourt is bounded by snecked rock-faced walls with freestone coping and iron railings. The right-hand side splays at the corner with Dora Street. Three square monolithic gate piers with moulded caps and bases carry two iron gates with intersecting arches across the dog bars and finials. Each pair of gates leads to a flight of stone steps. At the left end is a replacement boarded door under a segmental head, providing access to a basement passage at the side of the chapel.

The interior was not accessible at the time of survey.
