Description
HSBC Bank is a Gothic style building that stands three storeys high with an attic. It is constructed from snecked rock-faced stone, featuring pale freestone quoins and dressings, and topped with a slate roof that has a moulded cornice and coped gables supported by moulded kneelers, along with stone end stacks. The front facade has three bays, with a central porch that includes double panelled doors and a plain replacement overlight set within a pointed doorway. This doorway is adorned with half nook shafts and foliage capitals, a moulded arch, a hood mould, and an impost band. The angles of the porch are enhanced with nook shafts, and the stone parapet displays diamond-pattern friezes.
The side walls feature cusped windows with original coloured glazing, each topped with gabled hoods that have crocketed finials, and a blank panel is located below the parapet. In the lower storey, the windows have been replaced but retain their original openings, which have shallow triangular heads for the lintels. The middle storey showcases paired 2-pane sash windows beneath shouldered lintels and relieving arches. The upper storey contains segmental-pointed 4-pane sash windows set on corbelled sills, with a central attic gable featuring a similar window, flanked by gabled roof dormers that include a round-headed window and a 4-pane sash window on the right, with a replacement window on the left.
A moulded freestone band runs between the lower and middle storeys, though it is partly obscured by a modern sign, and it continues around the three-window left gable end. This band incorporates the date in raised Gothic letters at the base of a corbelled first-floor false external stack. The lower storey has one large and two smaller openings, all fitted with replaced windows. Further to the left is a blocked opening beneath a shouldered lintel, located in a rear lean-to. The middle storey features 2-pane sash windows under shouldered lintels with relieving arches, while the upper storey has a single central 4-pane sash window beneath a segmental-pointed head.
The rear of the building is rendered and includes a two-storey lean-to and barred windows. The property has not been inspected.
