Description
Chantry is a tall building resembling a town hall, built with three storeys plus an attic. It features rendered elevations, wide eaves, and a hipped pantile roof topped with a turret that has a gabled mansard roof and an urn finial. There is an imitation clock face on the front. The southwest elevation, facing the village, is divided into two parts, with the westernmost bay recessed. This bay includes an arched multi-pane window on the ground floor, a 12-pane sash window on the first floor, and a 6-pane sash window under the eaves above. The remaining section has three tall, round-headed windows arranged over two storeys, all with multi-pane glazing. Above, in a hipped dormer, is a 12-pane, two-part casement window.
The southeast elevation features 12-pane sashes on the first floor and a flat-roofed dormer with a three-part casement in the attic. The ground floor has a part-glazed entrance accessed by a metal stair, with a tripartite window to the left.
The rear (northeast) elevation is deliberately asymmetrical. It has a recessed bay on the right with an entrance on the left, and sashes on three storeys to the right. The entrance is framed by an applied wooden baroque doorcase and a small-pane glazed door. The left section is advanced and has a recessed loggia on the ground floor, with the upper floors jettied out and supported by a cast iron column at the corner. The third floor also jetties out, featuring a sloped soffit. Windows include small 4-, 6-, and 12-pane styles, with a large 12-pane sash on the upper floor that has a segmental iron balcony in front and a segmental fan above. A small lean-to store projects from the front left, with its return flush against the southeast elevation and boarded doors. The entire building is set upon a partly arcaded plinth that is built into the hillside.
