Description
The main entrance to Vaynol Park, including the flanking approach walls, is constructed of rock-faced snecked rubble with freestone dressings. This tripartite entrance features a free Indian style design, characterized by tapered pilasters and flat pyramidal finials, along with a bracketed cornice that is also repeated on the piers of the flanking walls. The main carriageway has a segmental arch, while the flanking pedestrian arches are semi-circular headed, all adorned with voussoirs. The entrance is completed with iron gates that feature scrollwork below the lock rail. Each side has additional 'bays', each containing a semi-circular headed opening with iron bars.
The boundary walls, which adjoin at right angles and gently step downwards, are designed similarly to the main entrance and create a pair of deep quadrants, each consisting of 8 bays and exhibiting more intricate detailing than the main wall. These walls have battered sections, a plinth, channelled freestone pilasters, coping, and finials. Each bay features distinctive voussoired straight-sided oval openings, also with iron bars. On the southwest side, near the main entrance, one bay is opened between piers, providing access to the drive leading to Wern-y-Gogas.
