Description
Port House is a 19th-century building designed in a Classical style. It features a front made of fine granite ashlar on a plain plinth, while the sides and rear are constructed from rubblestone and rendered. The hipped slate roof is set behind a parapet, adorned with a moulded eaves cornice and a plain blocking course above. The building is two stories high and has a symmetrical three-bay front, with the central bay slightly projecting and topped with a pediment that houses a clock in the tympanum.
On the first floor, there are horned 16-paned sash windows with stone lintels, and the ground floor has similar tripartite sashes without horns, set in segmental-headed arches. A prominent central entrance features a wide Doric porch with a moulded entablature above six-panel double doors, which have been joined into one. The side lights contain glazing bars in square panes, and there is a segmental-headed fanlight above the door. A notable red brick axial ridge stack with stepped capping aligns directly with the entrance.
The rear elevation, which faces the garden, is essentially a mirror image of the front, but instead of a porch, it has paired sash windows. There are additional sash windows on the two-bay returns, including a painted dummy window on the upper right of the right return.
The building has been converted for modern office use but retains its original staircase in the central entrance hall. This staircase rises along the back wall and features open iron treads, scrolled balusters, and a turned newel at the foot, along with six-panel doors throughout.
