Description
Siloh Baptist Chapel is a single-storey chapel with a gable entry, built in the 19th century, accompanied by a two-storey chapel house positioned at right angles to the west side. The chapel features walls constructed of rubble that are rendered, with additional rendered dressings, and has a slate roof adorned with ball finials at the gable ends. The gable entrance elevation is notably symmetrical, with stressed, rendered quoins at the front angles and a moulded cornice that forms a gable pediment. The central entrance is segmental-headed, featuring a square-headed doorway beneath a fanlight with radial bars. On either side of the entrance are slightly recessed, segmental-headed sash windows with glazing bars. The openings are framed with Tuscan architraves that support moulded hoodmoulds with keystones on shaped brackets. Above the doorway is a slate tablet encased in a round-headed moulded surround, with a rectangular tablet featuring a shaped surround in the tympanum above. Each return elevation consists of two bays with similarly detailed windows, although these lack moulded architraves, and there are two additional windows at the rear.
The chapel house, set at right angles to the west side of the chapel, is a two-storey structure with a two-window range. It has a doorway located at the left end and a gable stack on the right. Built with similar materials, the ground floor openings feature eared architraves, while the first-floor windows, positioned under the eaves, have plain rendered architraves. The windows are slightly recessed and consist of two-pane sashes.
The chapel grounds are enclosed by a low rubble wall, with the front wall rendered and topped with wrought iron railings. The central gateway is marked by Chinoiserie style gate piers that are topped with ball finials and connected by an ascending arch decorated with fleur de lys finials. The double gates feature round-headed arched head rails, an upper rail, and lock rails, with interspersed railings of varying heights that culminate in fleur de lys finials.
The interior of the chapel was not accessible during the inspection.
