Description
The Church of St Mary is a simple rectangular medieval church, with the chancel and nave being structurally undivided. The walls are made of local rubble with sandstone dressings, and the roof is covered with locally quarried slates, having been re-roofed in the mid-19th century. The roof features stone copings, a cross at the eastern end, and a single ashlar bellcote at the western end.
The entrance is located in the north wall, towards the right (west) end, featuring a boarded door set in a pointed arched doorway that is framed by a square head and recessed with a large stone lintel. At the left (eastern) end, there is a 15th-century cinquefoil-headed window in a square frame, along with a 19th-century window that has two trefoil-headed lights in a square frame at the center. The south wall contains two similarly designed 19th-century windows, with the central window having three lights and the western window having two lights. Additionally, there is a single trefoil-headed light at the eastern end that is now blocked. The eastern gable window consists of two lancets with a small pointed light above, likely dating from the 14th century.
Inside, the church features a roof supported by five arch-braced collared trusses, three of which are of medieval origin. The walls are plastered and painted, and the floor is made of stone flags. The fittings include a 19th-century pulpit with four facing panels that have paired chamfered recesses with shaped heads and a moulded cornice. The sanctuary is raised by one step and is separated by a moulded sanctuary rail supported by widely spaced turned balusters.
