Description
Llanfaelog Community Centre is a mid-19th century rural school building. It is symmetrically planned and consists of two storeys with advanced gable wings at each end. At the rear, there is a modern single-storey lean-to addition. The building is constructed from local rubble with gritstone dressings and moulded kneelers, topped with a slate roof and rendered stacks.
The main façade faces west towards the road. The left (north) and right (south) gabled wings feature mirrored openings at each gable end. Each wing has a depressed, pointed-arched outer doorway and a 3-light, 6-pane casement window beside it. Above the window, a moulded string breaks the elevation. On the first floor, there is a single 6-pane casement window above the doorway and a similarly styled 2-light casement window above the adjacent window. The gable apex details differ: the north wing has a weathered gritstone panel, which likely once displayed the name of the school, and a pointed opening that housed the school bell, while the south wing features a narrow ventilation slit.
The linking block includes a 3-light, mullioned casement window offset to the right (south) end, with the lower part of the central light altered to create a square-headed doorway. The south wall has a 6-pane casement window to the west and a similarly detailed paired casement window to the east. At the rear (east) of the south wing, there is a square-headed doorway to the left (south) end, accessed by five stone steps, and a 3-light, 6-pane casement window to the right. The first floor has windows that match the ground floor in detail, including a single window above the door and a paired window to the right. The ground floor openings retain remnants of render over the stone lintels, with the doorway featuring a stressed keystone.
The building has been modernised since its conversion for use as a community centre.
