Description

The building is a large, single-story, gable-entry Calvinistic Methodist chapel constructed in the Gothic style. It was built in the 18th century using local rubble masonry with freestone dressings. The chapel includes a lean-to vestibule to the front, topped by a gabled porch. It has four bays, visually separated by offset buttresses, with angled buttresses marking the front and flanking the porch entrance. The roof is slate, with stone copings, decorative red clay ridge tiles, and gable crosses.

The main entrance is through a stepped, basket-headed doorway within a depressed pointed-arched frame featuring a quatrefoil light in the tympanum, flanked by two circular lights. The outer arch is constructed with voussoirs. Above the lean-to vestibule is a plate-traceried rose window set into a round-arched recess. A band of ashlar masonry runs along the gable apex. The return elevations each contain a single recessed lancet window, with two similarly detailed windows present in the rear wall. Shorter lancet windows are on either end of the lean-to vestibule.

Entering through the panelled double doors of the porch leads to a vestibule, also with panelled doors on either side. All doors feature diagonally set, tongued and grooved panelling, creating a chevron design. Beyond the vestibule is the main body of the chapel, incorporating a set fawr (a raised area) at the entrance end, between the entrance doors. The roof is comprised of four bays with a depressed wagon ceiling formed by plastered panels, two panels to each roof bay, recessed with wooden dividers decorated with carved floriate bosses at the intersections. The bays are articulated by 'trusses' carried down to wall posts on moulded corbels, with chamfered soffits adorned with repeated blocks of nail head carving to the angles. The chapel's fittings are made of pitch pine, including three banks of raking pews, with the central bank featuring staggered dividers. The set fawr is raised by one step and is rectangular with opposing side entrances; it has recessed panels with moulded surrounds to the lower part, and pierced panels above – the lower panel featuring a band of trefoils and the upper panel circles under a moulded rail.

The pulpit, also raised by one step, is canted and has opposing side entrances, with facing panels featuring tall recesses and moulded surrounds, set under a moulded cornice. The plastered walls are painted and have tongued and grooved panelling below a dado rail. Behind the pulpit, the panelling is interrupted by a tall, ogee-headed panel with a moulded surround; the sides have moulded capitals to the piers, with scrolled carvings extending from the surround and a carved fleur de lys at the apex. The panel below is recessed with an ogee-headed recess set within the moulded surround, and an inner trefoil-headed recess containing tongued and grooved panelling in a chevron design.
