Description

The Tabernacle Chapel is a late 19th-century, classical-style gable-entry chapel constructed in 1873. It is built of snecked Pennant sandstone with rusticated Bathstone dressings, and has a slate roof. The front features a triangular pediment that is cut by a full-height glorification arch. A wide, moulded cornice also acts as an impost band, from which the round arch rises without rustication. The cornice is engraved with "Tabernacle / Chapel 1873". The bay within the arch is slightly inset and contains a pair of doorways, each with a moulded round head, high vermiculated keystones, a moulded impost band, plain pilasters and tall bases. The doors are wood-panelled with segmental heads and overlights containing circles. Above the doors is a Venetian window, supported on four corbels and an impost band. Each arch of the window has a round head with a vermiculated keystone, in a style matching the doorways. Each window has two round-headed lights and an ogee motif above the central window, with small circles above the flanking windows. A roundel reading "Calvinistic Methodist" sits beneath the glorification arch, surrounded by four small circles. Tall windows, mirroring the style of the central window's lights, flank the glorification arch. The sill and impost bands continue across the facade from the central window.

The side walls are roughcast, with boarded eaves containing four tall round-headed sash windows with pink margin glazing. A lean-to structure with a boarded door is located to the far left of the south side. The rear of the building features a boarded roundel in the apex and a large organ chamber with a pitched roof, incorporating tall windows on both sides. A smaller lean-to is situated to the right.

A vestibule with panelled doors leading at an angle into the chapel contains a stained glass window depicting a dove. Side stairs lead to a three-sided gallery supported by narrow, fluted cast iron columns with foliate capitals. The wooden gallery front has panels containing open ironwork with scrolls and foliage, with small pilasters between the panels and a round clock in the centre. A handrail with open circles runs along the underside of the gallery. The chapel has a deep plaster ceiling cornice with an egg and dart moulded frieze, an ornate ceiling rose with foliate decoration, and a timber boarded surround with circles to the centre and sides. A large wooden arch, within a flat-headed surround reaching the ceiling cornice, is located opposite the entrance; it supports the organ, surrounded by Art Nouveau glass and two half-lit panelled doors. In front of the organ is a wooden pulpit with openwork front, accessed by curved steps to each side, incorporating moulded swept handrails and widely spaced balusters. The pulpit incorporates a set fawr of openwork panels, including large circles. The chapel contains panelled pews with gates.
