Description
Cwm Clais Mill is a three-bay barn constructed from rubble stone, topped with a pan-tile roof. It features opposing central doorways that lead into a through-passage. The western doorway has a timber lintel, with its jambs partially replaced with brick and breeze block. The eastern doorway appears to have been narrowed and has brick jambs. Some areas of the walls have been rebuilt. There is a large opening in the southern gable, which has been altered, and a lean-to has been added against the northern gable end, featuring a slate roof and an opening with brick jambs and a timber lintel.
Inside, the stone-lined wheelpit is aligned with the eastern side of the barn and is offset to the north of the entrance. It contains a cast iron wheel supported by six cast iron struts, wooden paddles, and spur gearing. The axle is connected to timber baulks on the walls of the wheelpit. A small gear on the northern side of the spur wheel connects to a drive shaft that runs into the barn. To the north of the wheelpit, there is a stone boundary wall that extends from the side of the barn and steps down towards the west. The tail race enters a culvert beneath the wall, featuring a segmental brick head. The wall continues to the south as a low breeze block enclosure wall. The head race is no longer intact, but a former stone and breeze-block lined culvert remains to the south, along with a pool made of similar materials.
The interior includes a collar truss roof, although some of the timbers have been replaced. There is a partial brick-paved floor in the through-passage, and the walls are partially lined with breeze blocks. A low loft at the northern end is supported by renewed squared timbers. The ground floor in the northern section steps down and is now made of concrete. The drive shaft enters the eastern wall at a low level and connects to a belt drive wheel. Additionally, a stable has been created at the southern end, featuring a brick-paved floor.
