Description
Sunray is a two-story suburban house built in the 20th century, displaying influences of the Modern Movement alongside Art Deco styling. The exterior walls are roughcast and painted white, topped by a flat roof hidden behind a plain parapet. Roughcast stacks are visible at the rear. The majority of the windows have been replaced but retain original coloured glass, including sunburst designs in the smaller fixed windows. The main windows feature an upper tier of fixed or opening lights with abstract patterns and scenic elements.
The asymmetrical facade is characterized by a wide, full-height bow window on the right side, with the main doorway positioned to the left, sheltered beneath a balcony. The balcony’s handrail has been replaced, covering an open-fronted porch with a mosaic inlay in the marble paving. The doorway itself has a moulded surround and a replaced door, flanked by narrow windows with coloured glass. Above the doorway, a later balcony features scrolled ironwork to the balustrade, French doors with an overlight, and a projecting canopy. To the left of this balcony is a higher, narrower stair tower with three windows featuring sunburst glass, opening onto a roof terrace. To the right of the bow window is a further bay set back, likely a later addition as it is absent from early Ordnance Survey maps. This bay has French doors with flanking lights and an overlight incorporating coloured glass on the lower level and a broad window with wide-lying panes in the upper level.
A narrow bay, set back on the left side of the stair tower, incorporates a wrap-around window on the lower level, narrow windows facing the front, and a two-light casement to the side, all with sunburst glazing. A lower, two-story, two-bay service wing is set further back to the left. The upper level of the service wing has three-light casements, while the lower level features a tripartite window on the left and the outline of a blocked, matching window on the right. The service wing projects to the rear, featuring half-lit boarded garage doors, a three-light casement, a doorway with a replaced door, and a flat projecting canopy. Two three-light windows are located on the upper level.
The rear of the main range has uneven window placement, with a three-light window on the upper level and two further three-light windows below. Both three-light windows feature broad-lying panes in the center. The left angle of the house is rounded, featuring six-light wrap-around windows and a lower parapet line. The left-hand added bay is set back with three-light windows incorporating lying panes. The house was not inspected internally.
