Description

The War Memorial is a tapering pier topped with a Celtic cross, made of rendered concrete. The pier features ropework moulding at its angles and bands of interlace work at both the base, which slightly flares out, and the top. The Celtic cross is also adorned with interlace work on each face, along with a band on the small plinth beneath it. The eastern face of the pier lists the names of those who fell in the Great War (1914 - 18), while the western face bears the inscription, "They shall not grow old as we that are left ..."

The memorial stands on a three-tier platform, with the upper tier made of rendered concrete and the lower two tiers constructed of coursed grey rock-faced stone topped with flat concrete capstones. The eastern face of the upper tier states, "Erected by Robert B Byass & Co. To the glory of God and in memory of those men in their employ who gave their lives for their country in the Great War 1914-18." The edge of the capstone on the middle tier references World War II, 1939 - 1945. A concrete tablet inset into the masonry below lists the names of the men who died, which continue on the face of the lowest tier.
