Description
The building is a cowhouse, hammels, and cartshed at Trefarthen, dating from the 19th century. It features an unlofted three-bay hammel on the left and a six-bay cowhouse to the right (south). The walls are constructed of rubble, topped with a pitched slate roof. The hammels have wood lintels, while the cowhouse has slate lintels. The cowhouse includes a single door facing the yard, with a window on either side. At the rear (east) is a feed-preparation room, and to the left (north) of the cowhouse is an advanced wing with a loose stall.
Attached to the south end of the range, connecting the cowhouse with the southern corn barn, is a three-bay cartshed that has servants' quarters above. This structure also features rubble walls and piers, with slate lintels and a hipped slate roof. There is a door to the tack-room on the left (south) and three cart bays to the right (north). The loft above has four windows, each equipped with swivelling ventilators, and a stone staircase leads to the loft at the south end.
Both buildings have been opened to form one cowhouse, which includes a stone bench for a feeding trough that runs around the side and rear walls. The roof structure features a sawn king-post roof truss.
