Description
Trefarthen is a 19th-century building that features a symmetrical design with a central porch. It has two storeys with attics and a three-window range, and is double-depth in plan. To the right (north) is a two-storey wing with three windows, while the rear (west) has a two-storey kitchen wing. The walls are made of squared rubble; the front elevation is finished in white-painted stucco, the left side (south) is entirely slate-hung, and the rear is plain stone with slate lintels. The hipped slate roof projects at the eaves and verges, with rooflights at the front and rectangular slate-hung stacks at either end. There is a plain sill band at the front with moulded hood bands over the windows.
The central porch features a moulded plinth and cornice, coupled pilasters flanking a round-headed doorway with moulded jambs, and round-headed windows on either side. The flanking windows have been renewed in their original openings, but two 4-pane sash windows remain on the first floor. The left return elevation (south) is slate-hung, with one 4-pane sash window, two original windows similar to the front, and one modern window. The rear (west) of the main block includes the two-storey kitchen wing, which has a pitched slate roof projecting at the verge and 4-pane sash windows.
Attached to the right (north) of the main part and slightly set back is a two-storey wing with a three-window range that has a lower roofline than the main house, featuring a rectangular stone stack raised in brick at the right gable end. This wing also has 4-pane sash windows at the front and rear.
Inside, the central staircase plan leads to a hallway containing a dog-leg staircase with a curtail step and shaped brackets on an open string, along with stick balusters and a wreathed and ramped handrail. The ground floor rooms have panelled doors and window shutters, with moulded plaster coving on the ceilings throughout. The ground floor sitting room to the left has a slate fire surround with a mantel supported by scrolled, fluted corbels and decorative acanthus leaf detail below; it features a cast iron fire with a decorative trellis work design. The sitting room to the left has a similar fire surround, while the dining room to the left at the rear also has a similarly detailed fire surround, though without the acanthus leaf detail, and includes a floriated decorative hob grate.
