Description
Duntarvie Castle is a tower house dating to around 1590. It comprises an oblong, three-storey main block with square, four-storey towers at the north corners. The building is constructed of rubble and is in a somewhat dilapidated condition, with a corbelled and stepped gable and a missing roof. An eaves course is present. Stair turrets are located in the north re-entrant angles.
Internally, the first floor is vaulted. A single flight of stairs leads to the Hall and Drawing Room on the second floor.
The castle was likely built for James Durham, who was granted the lands of Duntarvie in 1588, and subsequently acquired by the Hope family and incorporated into the Hopetoun Estate. It is designated a Scheduled Monument.
