Description
The Crown Arms is an early 19th-century, three-storey and attic tenement located at 177-179 High Street in Linlithgow. It features a three-bay design with a pend and serves as licensed premises on the ground floor. The building is constructed from squared and coursed cream sandstone rubble, with a lintel course above the second-floor windows and raised margins.
On the north elevation, the entrance door is positioned off-centre to the right and consists of two-leaf panelled doors. Large windows flank the entrance on both sides, and the pend is located to the outer left. The first and second floors exhibit regular fenestration. There is a two-storey wing at the rear that incorporates a spiral stair.
The first and second floors have timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing, while the attic features a pivot window. The ground floor has modern glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes ashlar coped skews and substantial rendered stacks on the gables. A single central slate-hung piended dormer with rounded angles is also present.
Inside, the front room boasts polished dark-wood boarding that reaches the ceiling height. There is a fine timber chimney-piece and attached bench seating along the length of the west wall, as well as a panelled timber bar. The inner doors at the entrance have coloured glass panels, and there is a good collection of brewery mirrors.
