Description
Illieston Castle is a traditional, two-and-a-half storey house dating from circa 1600, constructed of rubble and featuring a corbie-stepped gable design. The building is roofed with slate and has gabled dormers. A square, three-and-a-half storey stair tower is located on the south side, incorporating a corbelled turret in the re-entrant angle. The interior has been modernised.
A forecourt on the north side is flanked by offices and stables, also with corbie-stepped gables. A Renaissance gateway, inscribed with "MIE, Anno 1665", provides access to the forecourt.
The land was acquired in 1664 by John Ellis, an advocate connected to the families of Plenland, West Lothian, and Southsyde, Midlothian, and the house was subsequently altered. Ownership passed to the Hamiltons in 1693 and then to the 3rd Earl of Hopetoun in 1765.
