Description

Kirknewton House is a country house, originally built around 1690, but significantly altered in the mid-19th century, approximately 1835, in a Scots Baronial style. Further alterations occurred around 1870. The house is two-and-a-half storeys high and constructed of random rubble with a slated roof.

The house was originally built for James Maconochie, 1st of Meadowbank, and subsequently altered for the 2nd Lord Meadowbank and Allen Maconochie, 4th of Meadowbank. An earlier Georgian east wing, constructed around 1795 for the 1st Lord Meadowbank, was demolished in approximately 1950.

The interior features panelled rooms. A one-storey, piended extension to the main block is also present. The property was once known as Meadowbank House. Architectural drawings by William Playfair, dating from 1835-6, are held at Edinburgh University Library.
