The Old School House, Station Road, Kirknewton

The Old School House, located on Station Road in Kirknewton, dates back to 1750 and underwent alterations and extensions in the early 19th century. This two-storey, three-bay building originally served as a manse and school house. The original rectangular-plan manse was extended and remodeled into a T-plan structure with a plain classical front. It features rubble construction with projecting droved ashlar quoins and tabbed openings.

The symmetrical front elevation faces north and includes an advanced central bay, which was added in 1835. This bay has a broad gable end topped with a plain pediment. The central door is flanked by a masonry pitched canopy supported by unusual brackets, with a single opening above and a blind arrow loop in the pediment.

The rear elevation, facing south, shows the original block on the right with thackstanes, while a 19th-century addition is on the left, featuring a raised wallhead. There is a small single-storey porch offset to the left, and the building has irregular fenestration. The roof is covered with grey slate and has straight skews, while the gable stacks are droved and corniced, topped with octagonal chimney cans.
