Description
Canal House Basin, located at Bowling Basin on the Forth and Clyde Canal, was opened in 1790 by the Forth and Clyde Canal Company and modified around 1820. The basin has an irregular shape with masonry walls topped with heavy coping. On the west side, there is a lock from around 1820 that leads down to Bowling Harbour, which has recently been regated. In the southwest corner, there is a chamber of the original lock that connects to the River Clyde, although this connection is now blocked off at the sea end.
