Description

The Upper Basin at Bowling Basin on the Forth and Clyde Canal was built around 1896 for the Caledonian Railways Canal Department. This pentagonal basin features a channel that runs under a swing bridge, which is listed separately, at the western end and a lock at the eastern end. There is an elevated roadway and platform for a house, also listed separately, on the northern side.

The basin is shaped like an irregular pentagon, with walls made of mass concrete that are channelled like railway works, topped with ribbed copes. At the western end, the channel is spanned by both a bascule bridge and a swing bridge, which are listed separately. The construction of the channel matches that of the basin, but the walls taper down to the level of the lower basin's cope under the swing bridge. On the eastern side of the bascule bridge, there are standard Forth and Clyde Canal railings made of cast iron with wooden uprights, along with a top and middle rail. A short section of similar railing is found under the bridge on the northern side. Cast-iron bollards are positioned on each side at the entrance to the basin.

The lock has a chamber constructed similarly to the basin, with gates that have been recently replaced with steel. A cast-iron lamp standard is located in the northeast corner.

Along the northern side, the elevated roadway broadens at the eastern end to accommodate houses that are listed separately. To the west of the ramp, there is a curved pink concrete wall with a chamfered base and a grey concrete cope, ending in a squat circular pier. To the east of the ramp, a retaining wall curves south at the western end. The wall is channelled like the others, with a parapet marked at the base by a string course and a chamfered cope. Pilasters with flat pyramidal caps are spaced at intervals. Cast-iron lamp standards are placed at intervals, featuring later steel tube swan-neck heads. The Round House platform has a stanchion and tube railing instead of a parapet, along with a stairway leading down to the lock level at the southeast corner.
