Description
Muirland School, dated 1869, is a Gothic-style school hall with a rectangular plan. It is constructed from stugged sandstone and features a deep base course and stone mullions. The eaves are slightly advanced, and the rafters are exposed. The building has trefoil-headed, 2-light windows.
On the west (main) elevation, there are four nearly symmetrical bays. To the outer right, there is a bell-cast gabled porch made of timber on a sandstone base, which has a shouldered arch with a 2-leaf chevron boarded door. Below the eaves, there are three 2-light windows arranged symmetrically.
The south elevation features a 3-light window at the center, with a datestone plaque above it and a flag-pole. To the outer right, there is a lean-to porch with a boarded door and a letterbox fanlight.
The school has timber lying-pane sash and case windows, a steeply-pitched graded grey slate roof with lead flashings, a candlesnuffer spirelet, and a fleche at the center ridge, which has a wooden base and is covered with fish-scale slates, topped with a finial.
Surrounding the school is a low plinth wall with simple hoop cast-iron railings and posts.
