Description
This is a mid 19th century cast iron milepost located on the A821 at the Pass of Trossachs. Following the opening of the nearby Trossachs Hotel in 1849 and the arrival of the railway to Callander in the 1850s, this part of the A821 became very busy with tourists, serving as the main route through the Trossachs to the head of Loch Katrine. The milepost is of historical interest due to its relatively early date and its simple yet elegant design compared to later mileposts.
The milepost is set on a pedestal and features an angled two-sided face with a half pyramidal cap and a blank rear section. The southeast face displays the distances to Loch Katrine (½ mile) and Ellens Isle (1 1/4 miles). The southwest face indicates the distances to Trossachs Hotel (¾ mile), Callander (9 miles), and Stirling (25 miles).
