Description
This is a mid 19th century cast iron milepost located on the A821 road near Coilantogle, between Callander and Loch Katrine. Following the opening of the nearby Trossachs Hotel in 1849 and the arrival of the railway to Callander in the 1850s, this part of the A821 became a busy route for tourists heading to the Trossachs, which ends at the head of Loch Katrine. The milepost is of historical interest due to its relatively early date and its simple yet elegant design compared to later mileposts.
The milepost is set on a pedestal and features an angled two-sided face with a half pyramidal cap and a blank rear section. The southeast face displays the distances to 'Trossachs Hotel 5 ½ miles' and 'Loch Katrine 6 ½ miles', while the southwest face shows 'Callander 3 miles' and 'Stirling 19 miles'.
