Description

This is a picturesque, asymmetrical, three-bay, single-storey, L-plan former gamekeeper’s cottage dating to the later 19th century, with later alterations. It is situated on the southwestern bank of the Garbh Uisge River, close to Kilmahog Bridge (listed separately). The building has group value from its attractive appearance alongside the bridge.

The southeast and northeast elevations are adorned with decorative bargeboards and diamond-pane glazing. The principal southeast elevation features a basket-arched entrance set within a gabled porch in the centre, and a prominent battered base course running along the entire elevation. The bay to the left is set back, with a gablet above the window incorporating a blank armorial panel. The right bay is a larger gabled section with a blank date stone above the window.

The northeast elevation of the original cottage is relatively plain, but features a prominent stack and a piended canopy over the window. The southwest side elevation is plain as it is not visible from the road or river. A late 20th-century single-storey and attic extension runs to the side and rear of the building.

The interior has been reconfigured to offer modern accommodation and is currently run as a bed and breakfast since 2004.

The cottage is constructed of coursed rubble to the principal and northeast sides, and random rubble to the southwest side. Yellow sandstone is used for the dressings around openings, quoins, and the base course. The front door is timber-boarded with a diamond-paned glazed upper panel and a slim, basket-arched fanlight. The windows are timber casements with diamond panes. Decorative timber bargeboards to the principal elevation include spiked finials and drop pendants, while the southwest side has plain bargeboards. A squat, coped, shouldered ashlar gable apex stack is on the southwest, and a taller, coped, shouldered ashlar wallhead stack is on the northeast, both with cans. The roofs are overhanging pitched grey slate with exposed rafters, and the original cottage has cast-iron rainwater goods.
