Description

Built in 1837, Lynwood is a two-storey, three-bay, rectangular former manse, now the Lynwood Hotel (formerly Oakland’s Hotel). The exterior is painted harl with painted ashlar margins and dressings, accented by quoin strips. A decorative eaves cornice runs along the front, and there is a base course.

The west elevation features a pilastered and corniced doorway with a blank tablet above, leading to a four-panelled door and a plate glass fanlight. A half-glazed vestibule door with a plate glass fanlight is flanked by windows. The windows are symmetrically arranged on the first floor.

The north elevation has a broad gable with a window on the right at ground level, a flat-roofed modern block in the centre left, and a first-floor window in the centre. A broad apex stack sits at the gable’s peak.

The east elevation features a large multi-pane stair window centrally, with flanking first-floor windows. A piend-roofed single-storey block is attached to the ground floor on the left, and a modern wooden structure is situated on the ground floor to the right.

The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, with air vents in the ground floor windows. The roof is grey slate with cast-iron rooflights, ashlar coping to the skew, a broad corniced apex stack, and octagonal cans.

Inside, the staircase has cast-iron balustrades, and the ground floor rooms have been modernised.
