Description

This is a former steading, dating to 1774 and 1776, which has been converted into housing. It is located in Arrochar, within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, and originally served Inverioch/Arrochar House (now the Claymore Hotel, a separate listed building). The building is laid out in a U-plan and is constructed of rubble with harl and cement harl pointing, with ashlar margins and dressings, and reconstituted stone margins.

The north-east range, which faces the principal courtyard, is the tallest part of the steading and has seven bays. It features moulded cornices to the outer doors. Modern boarded doors and windows are present, along with alternating modern rooflights. The south-west elevation, at the rear, is irregular, with one door and two loft windows under the eaves.

The returns feature a tall gable with round-headed cart arches at the centre, now infilled as windows. A narrow round-headed window is located in the gablehead, and the gable is topped with a pedestal and ball finial, incorporating a 1774 datestone. A gable on the south-east elevation shows a 1776 datestone.

The north-west range, facing Church Road, is four bays and exhibits near symmetry. This range features four large slate-hung dormers that are also symmetrically disposed. The courtyard elevation shows six bays arranged as a three-bay house, with a central door flanked by windows, and two symmetrically placed dormers. A gable with a round-headed window is on the outer left.

The south-east range has a five-bay courtyard elevation with two symmetrically placed slate-hung dormers. A four-bay rear range is present, with a gable containing a round-headed window to the outer right.

Modern plate glass windows are installed. The roof is of grey slate with modern rooflights. The building includes ashlar coping to the skewbacks and skewputts, tall coped apex stacks, and ridge stacks.
