Description
Upperton Cottage is a traditional single-storey cottage, likely built in the early 19th century and partially rebuilt around 1900. It features three bays and has a lower piend-roofed, two-bay ancillary structure attached to the west, along with a timber porch from an earlier cottage. This building is the last remaining example of an early clachan. The exterior is constructed of roughly coursed rubble with squared rubble quoins.
The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, is symmetrical. The central bay includes a small pitch-roofed timber porch that has a small horizontal bipartite window on the left side. The flanking bays contain later bipartite windows that have been altered from their original single-window design. There are three small cast-iron rooflights present. The outer left bays of the ancillary structure are slightly recessed and feature two horizontally divided stable-type boarded timber doors along with two traditional rooflights.
The cottage has a 4-pane glazing pattern in its timber sash and case windows and is topped with a corrugated iron roof. The chimney stacks are made of coped ashlar, complete with thackstanes, some cans, and ashlar-coped skews with block skewputts.
Inside, some early interior details have been preserved, including boarded timber walls, a central staircase, and a fireplace that has a working swey leading to the byre end.
