Description
Craig Dhu Lodge is a later 19th century, multi-gabled, two-storey house with an irregular plan, designed in the style of a shooting lodge. It is reputedly built as the dower house for Cluny Castle and is situated on an elevated site. The former servants' wing is built into the slope to the northwest and was enlarged with an additional block in the late 19th century.
The exterior features rubble construction with dressed openings, long and short quoins, and timber sash and case plate glass windows. The entrance is located in the re-entrant angle of an advanced gable on the principal southwest elevation, with remnants of a former 19th century conservatory visible above the doorway. A distinctive small two-storey circular-plan tower with a tall conical roof is positioned between the main house and the lower former servants' wing on the principal elevation. This tower has bellcast eaves adorned with fish-scale and banded slates, topped with a weather-vane. The northeast garden elevation has a slightly advanced gabled section, with windows set within chamfered arises at the ground level, and moulded detail above that returns to the original line of arris. The former servants' wing to the northwest is set below the main house and includes a two-storey circular-plan observatory at the north corner, which has not functioned as an observatory since 2004. A service courtyard is located in front of the wing. The building features overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, steeply pitched gables, dormer windows, and grey slate roofs.
Inside, there is an impressive hall that leads to a large drawing room, which retains original features such as simple cornices and four-panelled doors.
