Auchernach Cottages, Auchernach House

Auchernach Cottages, located at Auchernach House, date from around 1809 or earlier, with a westward extension added around 1850, porches introduced around 1940, and an eastern extension completed in 1980. The building features a single storey and attic, with a rectangular plan and seven bays. It has early origins and includes intricate logwork additions made by Italian prisoners of war. The exterior is harled, showing evidence of a boulder base course at the rear and deep-set openings.

The southwest entrance elevation has piend-roofed logwork porches with decorative diamond-pattern detailing; the left porch is full-height, while the right is single storey with a dormer section behind. The rear (northeast) elevation has small original openings, and the southeast gable (the extension) features hollowed-out stone.

The windows have 4- and 9-pane glazing patterns in top-opening timber frames. The roof is covered with grey slates and includes modern rooflights at the rear. There are coped ashlar and shouldered stacks with thackstanes and cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews.

Inside, the cottage has low ceilings, some timber-lined walls, and original openings with deep cills. The sitting room features a panelled ceiling from around 1920.

Additionally, there is a tall, rectangular-plan ancillary building at the rear of the property. This structure is slated and timber-framed on a stone base, with a 6-pane glazing pattern in the windows and a louvered air vent at the gablehead.
