1-6 Speyside House, 27 The Square, Grantown-On-Spey

Speyside House, located at 27 The Square in Grantown-On-Spey, was built in 1824. This symmetrical classical building features a west-facing facade that is two stories high and has five bays. The front is made of grey granite ashlar, while the return gables are also of ashlar, and the rear is harled with ashlar margins.

The central bay is advanced and forms a square tower that rises above the eaves in two stages. It has a boldly rusticated doorpiece with a fanlight featuring radial glazing and a later double-leaf panelled door. The first floor has a Venetian window with intersecting glazing, and above it, there is a tripartite window in the square stage that supports an octagonal drum clock tower topped with a domed leaded roof, a finial, and a weathervane. The clock tower has windows and clock faces on alternate facets, with the clock face missing from the rear. Stumpy granite urns are positioned at each angle of the square tower, flanking the base of the octagon.

The building mainly features 12-pane glazing, with lying-pane glazing in the octagon windows. It has moulded eaves cornices, coped rear wallhead stacks, and a piended slate roof. There is also a substantial later two-storey, four-bay rear wing with 4-pane glazing in its windows.

Inside, little of interest remains except for a clock, which is said to date from 1824 and is attributed to a clockmaker from Forres. This clock is currently in full working order.
