Description
Balnagower Cottage is an unusual and striking single storey and attic estate cottage from the earlier 19th century, located prominently on the north bank of the River Dee. The cottage features extended verandahs with rustic timber columns on the east and west sides. The southern elevation is constructed of coursed rock-faced pink granite, while the other sides are made of rubble granite. It has deep eaves and a symmetrical southern façade, which includes a full-height advanced gabled granite porch with an entrance. There are flanking windows that slightly project on stone corbels, topped with broad piended gables that break the eaves. The entrance has a tall segmental arch with a two-leaf decorated timber door and a fanlight above. The cottage also has a pair of attic dormers with broad piended roofs and a 20th-century box dormer extension at the rear.
The roof is piended with ridge stacks on the west and east sides, featuring rectangular coped stack bases with two coped diamond shafts on each. The windows are currently boarded, and the roof is covered with grey graded slates.
Inside, the cottage was not fully inspected during the last survey in November 2005 due to fire damage, but it still retains remnants of an iron stove and a timber chimneypiece surround.
